Anna

Jade is not standing in front of the Huntmore with Stone and the rest of them when I approach. Where she could be is anyone’s guess — though most likely yelling at some poor barista about the ratio of foam to milk in her soy latte with an added comment about the ethics of working for a corporation.

I’ve hit a stroke of luck. Getting Stone on my side will be a lot easier without his girlfriend/soul partner staring me down with sharpened steel glares and equally cutting words.

Stone’s not even making an attempt to protest. The signs — battered from the weather over the past couple weeks — lay piled off to the side while he and a motley collection of casually cool twenty-somethings lean against the fence or sit on the stoop of the neighboring apartments. They’re smoking herby cigarettes and tiny cigars. Stone even has a gnarled wooden pipe, the bowl of which resembles an old man with a rough, knotted beard.

“Mind if I join the fun?” I ask, trying to keep my words bright. If they can tell how nervous I actually am then the game is over before it’s even begun.

Stone looks me over with concealed interest. I’m wearing a gray t-shirt knotted just above my mid-drift with shapeless, baggy brown pants and black boots. My hair is tied up on top of my head and my only jewelery is a silver necklace adorned with a milky white stone.

My outfit is a balancing act. Sexy enough to hopefully draw Stone’s eye, but not enough to fully alienate Jade. And, just as precarious, to copy an earth-worshiping culture that I don’t understand without sopping in stereotypes.

“It’s Anna, right?” Stone says.

“I’m actually considering going by Babbling Brooke now,” I say.

All five of them stare at me without a word. As much as I want to fall into a sinkhole, it’s too late now. I have to sell this.

“‘Anna’ just didn’t feel like it, you know, represented me,” I say.

Stone looks at me with hard eyes for a beat. Then he nods and says, “Word. Society wanted to call me ‘Kenneth’, but that’s just another way they’re trying to keep me down.”

I’m not aware of the ways in which “society” tries to stomp on the sons of Wall Street bank CEOs’, but I’m definitely not going to comment.

Instead, I just repeat, “Word.” It almost sounds like I regularly say that.

“Hey, you’re that chick.” That comes from a tall, skinny guy sporting a scruffy goatee and a durag. “The one who tried to get in here the other week.”

“Yeah, that’s her,” Stone says. “She came by after too, tried to appeal to our sympathies.” His words aren’t outright hostile, but they’re getting there, definitely less friendly than last time. If Jade were here, they’d already be kicking my ass down the street. I need to act fast if I’m going to win them over before she comes back.

“Yep, that was me,” I say with what I hope is a twinkling laugh.
